April is SAAM!
Later this week, Sexual Assault Awareness Month will be wrapping up. This year the theme for SAAM was "Prevent Sexual Violence... On Our Campuses". While violence prevention should be emphasized throughout the year, SAAM brings national attention to the prevalence and impact of sexual violence.
Sexual violence is often overlooked because it is a topic that is shrouded in shame. However, one of the goals of SAAM is to combat the shame that accompanies sexual violence and start an open discussion. On April 1st, President Obama released a proclamation about SAAM and the steps he is taking to reduce sexual violence throughout the United States.
On Wednesday, April 21st, Dartmouth held its annual Take Back the Night march. Traditionally held in April, this march features student and community speakers sharing their personal experiences with sexual violence. Additionally, Wednesday also marked the observance of Denim Day on campus. Since 1999, Peace Over Violence has asked community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault. You can learn more about the history of Denim Day here.
Thank you to everyone who participated in and supported these events at Dartmouth. Check our calendar for information about more upcoming events.
