Answers to your FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about
PTSD, TRAUMA & RECOVERY, and EVERYDAY SURVIVAL...
What is Post Traumatic Stress?
- A normal reaction to an abnormal situation.
- Post traumatic stress can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which physical harm occurred or was threatened.
- Traumatic events include military combat, natural or man-made disasters, and violent personal assault including sexual assault or domestic violence.
- A survivor of violent trauma may have recurring intrusive thoughts or memories of the ordeal, panic attacks, sleep problems, and increased anxiety. A survivor may also become emotionally distant or numb, especially to people they were once close to.
- It is important to note that post traumatic stress can occur in the absence of a clinical diagnosis of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). The symptoms of post traumatic stress must be present for at least one month before a PTSD diagnosis will be considered; however, a survivor needs support before and after a diagnosis.
- A student with post traumatic stress may exhibit symptoms intermittently. This does not negate the student's need for ongoing support and help.
